SINAZONGWE, Southern Province – The Government of Zambia has announced major progress in the development of the 600-megawatt (MW) thermal power plant in Sinazongwe, with construction expected to proceed in four phases and deliver significant energy and employment benefits to the nation.
Government Spokesperson Mr. Kapata confirmed that the project will create approximately 1,800 jobs once operational, adding that the plant is central to Zambia’s long-term strategy to stabilise power supply and support economic growth.
According to the rollout plan:
- 150MW will be integrated into the national grid by July 2026.
- An additional 150MW is scheduled for integration in October 2026.
- The final 300MW will come online in 2027, delivered in two segments to complete the full 600MW capacity.
Mr. Kapata further revealed that equipment for the first phase — a 300MW component of the thermal plant — has already arrived at a port in China and is en route to Sinazongwe. He emphasized that this milestone marks “a major step forward in ensuring Zambia meets growing electricity demand while enhancing energy security.”
Once completed, the Sinazongwe thermal plant is expected to significantly ease Zambia’s power deficit, support industrial productivity, and stimulate economic activity in Southern Province through job creation, infrastructure development, and local business opportunities.
