ERB Approves ZMW 6 Billion Investment in Zambia’s Energy Sector

Lusaka — The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has approved ZMW 6 billion (US$266 million) in new investments aimed at strengthening Zambia’s energy sector through expanded renewable energy generation, petroleum infrastructure, and improved fuel distribution systems.

In a press statement, the ERB confirmed the approval of 29 energy licences and 12 construction permits across various sub-sectors, marking one of the largest consolidated investment endorsements in recent years.

According to the ERB, the 29 licences include:

  • 11 licences for the manufacturing, supply, and installation of renewable energy generating equipment;
  • 4 licences for the road transportation of petroleum products;
  • 11 licences for the distribution, import, and export of petroleum products;
  • 2 licences for the distribution, import, and export of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG);
  • 2 licences for the importation and distribution of lubricants.

The regulator also announced the approval of two major construction projects expected to significantly boost Zambia’s renewable energy capacity.

The first is the JIGSCO Energy Corporation’s proposed 110MW solar photovoltaic plant in Chirundu, representing an estimated investment of US$190 million.
The second is Globerg Kafue Solar Limited’s 56MW solar plant in Kafue, valued at approximately US$54 million.

The ERB noted that these investments reflect growing private-sector confidence in Zambia’s evolving energy landscape, adding that the projects will help diversify the national energy mix, enhance supply security, and support national economic growth.

The regulator reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all licensed entities meet safety, environmental, and operational standards as the new projects move toward implementation.
