Construction of Phase Two of the Maamba Energy Thermal Power Plant has reached 60 percent completion, marking a significant milestone in Zambia’s efforts to boost electricity generation and address ongoing power deficits.
Maamba Energy Limited Chief Executive Officer, Cyrus Minwalla, confirmed that a critical boiler machine has already been installed, with further installations underway to ensure the project remains on schedule. Once completed, the new boiler will add 300 megawatts to the existing capacity, bringing the total output to 600 megawatts.
The project, which began in February last year, also includes the development of a 100-megawatt solar power plant, expected to be operational around June or July 2026.
Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu, who toured the facility, praised Maamba Energy Limited for its efforts in supporting a steady electricity supply. He reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding power production to sustain economic growth, particularly in sectors heavily reliant on electricity.
“The progress being made at Maamba Energy is commendable and demonstrates the private sector’s critical role in strengthening Zambia’s energy sector,” Minister Mwiimbu said.
The completion of Phase Two is expected to ease the country’s power shortages and provide reliable energy for industrial, commercial, and residential users, while the solar component reflects Zambia’s growing investment in renewable energy.
