Lusaka – Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) demonstrated its ongoing commitment to sports development in Zambia yesterday, with Acting CEO Malcolm Mewett leading a delegation to Woodlands Stadium to cheer on Aguila Stars FC, a Division One football team sponsored by KCM under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The visit highlighted KCM’s dedication to nurturing local talent and promoting football at both grassroots and competitive levels. The afternoon match between Aguila Stars FC and River Plate FC proved to be a thrilling contest, giving the home team an opportunity to showcase their skills to fans and stakeholders alike.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Mewett and his delegation visited Polo Fields Show Grounds to support Zambia’s women’s football team in action. The visit emphasized KCM’s focus on promoting gender equality in sports and providing platforms for female athletes to excel.
Since partnering with Aguila Stars FC, KCM has enabled the team to access improved training facilities, equipment, and resources, contributing to their enhanced performance and development. The sponsorship forms part of KCM’s broader CSR strategy to invest in community initiatives and foster a culture of sports excellence.
“Supporting local teams and athletes is an essential part of our commitment to giving back to the community. We are proud to contribute to the growth of sports in Zambia and to empower young talent,” said Mr. Mewett.
KCM affirmed that it will continue supporting local sports teams and initiatives, reinforcing its role in promoting both athletic development and community engagement across the country.
