Zambia has commenced the export of 200,000 metric tonnes of maize to Malawi, with the first consignment officially dispatched from the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) Chipata Depot.
The maize export was flagged off by Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo together with his Malawian counterpart, Roza Mbilizi, during a ceremony held in Chipata.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Mtolo said Zambia remains committed to assisting neighbouring countries during times of crisis, especially when affected by natural disasters and food shortages. He added that the Zambian Government has also rolled out community maize sales across the country to ensure local food security.
Meanwhile, Ms. Mbilizi expressed gratitude to the Zambian Government for the gesture, describing it as a strong sign of regional solidarity and brotherhood. She said the maize export will play a critical role in easing Malawi’s food deficit, which is currently affecting more than four million people.
In a related development, FRA Executive Director Justin Chuunka confirmed that all necessary export procedures were completed before the maize was released for shipment to Malawi.
