Zambia has strengthened its voice within the United Nations after its Permanent Representative, Dr. Chola Milambo, was elected Vice President of the Executive Board overseeing UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS.
The appointment followed a unified endorsement by the Africa Group, which backed Zambia’s candidature during consultations at UN Headquarters in New York, signaling regional confidence in the country’s diplomatic leadership.
Dr. Milambo will serve as one of four Vice Presidents on the Executive Board Bureau, which supports the Board’s work under the current presidency held by the Eastern European Group. The Bureau plays a central role in guiding policy direction and ensuring smooth coordination among member states.
The Executive Board provides strategic oversight and governance for the three UN agencies, with a mandate to enhance operational efficiency, accountability, and the effective delivery of development and population programmes across member countries.
While assuming the Vice Presidency, Dr. Milambo will continue executing his responsibilities as Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, ensuring continuity in the country’s diplomatic engagements.
Speaking after his election, Ambassador Milambo thanked the Africa Group for its confidence, stating that Zambia was honoured to carry forward the collective priorities and interests of African states within the Board’s leadership.
The development marks another milestone in Zambia’s expanding participation in global decision-making on development, population policy, and project implementation.
